Boy Scouts of America will celebrate Scout Sunday on Feb. 2, 2014. The Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Diocese of Orange encourages all Catholic Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Venturers, and adult Scouters to join together in celebration of the Eucharist that weekend.
Leaders of units sponsored by Catholic parishes are encouraged to contact their parish office to organize a special celebration of the event at a morning Mass. Meet in advance with the pastor to arrange for Scouts and Scouters to participate in the Mass, in full uniforms, as altar servers, Eucharistic ministers, lectors, presenters of the gifts, or ushers.
Ideally, seating should be reserved for Scouts and parents and the Mass should begin with the units proceeding in with flags.
Where time permits, the Charter Organization Representative should briefly address the congregation and have Scouts and leaders join the celebrant in the sanctuary for a special blessing. A very short reading of the BSA Mission statement, an inspiration reading about character or the Scout law, or simply have Scouts recite the Scout law and oath are just some of the very simple ideas that can be accomplished to recognize Scouting. This would also be an ideal opportunity to recognize adults and youth who may have earned their religious emblems.
If space in the church plaza or hall permits, request permission to set up display tables to highlight Troop, Pack, and Crew activities. Take advantage of the opportunity to recruit or make Scouts from non-Catholic chartered units aware of Catholic religious emblems and activities!
Promote your event by placing an announcement the parish bulletin at least a week before the event. Be sure to invite Scouts from all units who are members of the parish.
If your parish does not have a special Scout Sunday event, contact the Committee for a list of parishes were Scout Sunday celebrations are planned.
